Early life
Edward Christopher Sheeran was born on 17 February 1991 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. His early childhood home was located on Birchcliffe Road in nearby Hebden Bridge. John’s father, John, worked as a curator at Cartwright Hall in Bradford, while Imogen worked at Manchester City Art Gallery. His family relocated from Hebden Bridge to Framlingham in Suffolk in December 1995. He attended the independent Brandeston Hall preparatory school and then Thomas Mills High School, both in Framlingham.
Sheeran grew up in a household that was full of art and music, with parents who worked in the arts and a brother who would later become a music composer. Throughout his childhood, he demonstrated an interest in music after his family moved to Framlingham, Suffolk. At the age of four, he joined his church choir and began learning guitar later.
Sheeran stated that he was influenced to become a performer at the age of 11 after watching Irish musician Damien Rice perform live. Soon after, Sheeran started writing his own songs. During his high school years, he released the EP The Orange Room (2005) and the albums Spinning Man (2005), Ed Sheeran (2006), and Want Some? Before moving to London to pursue a music career in 2007, it received little attention. Career
2004–2010
At the age of thirteen, Sheeran released his first collection of work, titled Spinning Man, after beginning music recording in 2004. Since he was 15, he has been close friends with Passenger, another English singer, and they performed at the same concert in Cambridge. In 2008, he relocated to London and started performing in small venues. He auditioned for the ITV series Britannia High in 2008. After working as a guitar technician for Nizlopi, he opened for them in Norwich in April 2008. At the age of 18, Sheeran began studying music at the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) in Guildford, Surrey in the autumn of 2009, but left without permission in the same year to support hip-hop artist Just Jack.
In 2009, he released You Need Me, an EP, and worked with Essex singer Leddra Chapman multiple times, including on CeeLo Green’s “Fuck You”. Sheeran uploaded a video on SB.TV in February 2010. Jamal Edwards, a British entrepreneur, launched a channel and invited Sheeran to tour with him.
Sheeran’s No. 5 Collaborations Project, an independent EP released on January 8, 2011, included Grime artists like Wiley, Jme, Devlin, Sway, and Ghetts. With this EP, Sheeran gained mainstream attention for reaching number 2 in the iTunes chart without any promotion or label, selling over 7,000 copies in the first week. Sheeran performed a free show for fans at the Barfly in Camden Town three months later.
2011–2013
On April 26th, 2011, Sheeran appeared on the BBC music show Later… with Jools Holland, where he performed his debut single, ‘The A Team’. Six weeks later, “The A Team” was released as a digital download in the UK. The release was the primary single on Sheeran’s debut studio album, + (“Plus”).
On August 26th, Sheeran will release his second single from the album, ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’. The UK Singles Chart saw the second single peak at number four. ‘Lego House’ was released as the third single and reached the top ten on the Australian, Irish, and New Zealand Singles Charts. The music video for ‘Lego House’ features actor Rupert Grint, in an attempt to portray their similar appearance. Sheeran’s fourth consecutive top-ten single in the UK, peaking at number nine, was marked by the release of “Drunk” on February 19th, 2012.
From March to September 2013, Sheeran performed at arenas and stadiums across North America as the opening act for Swift’s Red Tour. According to Sheeran, this was his most significant tour and he included a scarlet ‘RED’ tattoo to mark it. In October 2013, Sheeran headlined three sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden in New York. At the concert, Sheeran debuted new songs, including ‘Tenerife Sea’, which is a future track on his second studio album. Sheeran released ‘I See Fire’ on November 5th, 2013. 2014-2015
On March 24, 2014, Sheeran performed at the Teenage Cancer Trust charity concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where he unveiled ‘Take It Back’. A track that will appear on the deluxe version of the second album. Sheeran’s second studio album, x (“Multiply”), was released worldwide on June 23, 2014. Over the course of three years, Sheeran composed more than 120 songs for the album.
Following ‘Don’t’, ‘Thinking Out Loud’ was released on September 24, 2014 as the album’s third single. Sheeran was the main character in the single’s accompanying video, performing a ballroom dance unlike his previous music videos.

A single-colored background with a solid mathematical symbol signified the release of Sheeran’s previous albums. On January 2nd, he posted a 10-second video on Twitter and other social media platforms, revealing the tracklist and cover art of his fourth studio album, ÷ (“Divide”), which was released on March 3, 2017.
On January 6th, Sheeran released two singles, ‘Shape of You’ and ‘Castle on the Hill’, the theme of the latter single is Sheeran’s upbringing in his hometown of Framlingham, Suffolk, with the phrase ‘castle’ referring to the castle in Framlingham.
2019-2022
On May 10th, 2019, Sheeran released the single ‘I Don’t Care’, a duet with Justin Bieber, from his fourth studio album, No. 6 Collaborations Project. The debut of ‘I Don’t Care’ on Spotify saw it reach 10.977 million daily global streams, breaking the platform’s single-day streaming record. The song made it to number one in the UK, Australia, and other markets, and number two in the US. On May 31st, “Cross Me” featuring Chance the Rapper and PnB Rock debuted at number 9 in the UK. The release of ‘Beautiful People’ featuring Khalid on June 28, 2019 saw it debut at number 3 in the UK and number 4 in Australia.
In 2019, Sheeran collaborated with country music singer Kenny Chesney on the song ‘Tip of My Tongue’. Sheeran won the Artist of the Decade award from the Official Charts Company in December 2019, for being the top performer on the UK album and singles charts during the 2010s.
On June 25, 2021, Sheeran released ‘Bad Habits’, the lead single from his upcoming fifth studio album. The third single, ‘Life Goes On’, was released on May 5th, 2023.

Personal life
Cherry Seaborn and Sheeran reconnected during a U.S. tour in 2015, and they tied the knot three years later. Sheeran’s next album, (Subtract), was being recorded in 2022. Seaborn was diagnosed with cancer and had an inoperable tumor until after the birth of their second child. Sheeran was experiencing difficulties dealing with the sudden death of his close friend Jamal Edwards, who had given him his break on SB.TV during this time. The events had a significant impact on Sheeran, who rewrote all of the songs on the album while dealing with his grief.
