Buffalo ghee has long been associated with strength, nourishment, and healthy weight gain in Indian households. However, with growing discussions around whether ghee supports weight loss or fits into modern diets, many people are asking whether buffalo ghee still deserves its reputation as a weight-gain food. According to nutrition experts, the answer lies in its nutritional composition. Naturally rich in calories and healthy fats, buffalo ghee can support healthy weight gain when included as part of a calorie-surplus diet. Here’s a closer look at what buffalo ghee contains and how its nutrients contribute to healthy weight gain.

    What Does Buffalo Ghee Contain?

Buffalo Ghee is prepared by clarifying the butter that is extracted from buffalo milk, which leaves behind concentrated milk fat along with some natural fat-soluble nutrients. One tablespoon (which comes up to about 14 grams) of buffalo ghee gives us around 120-125 calories and 14 grams of fat, which makes buffalo ghee one of the most calorie-dense traditional foods.

Nutritional experts have pointed out that buffalo ghee naturally contains:

    • Healthy fats (saturated and monounsaturated fats)
    • Around 120-125 calories in every tablespoon
    • Vitamin A
    • Vitamin D
    • Vitamin E
    • Vitamin K
    • Butyric acid
    • Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)

Each of these serves its own nutritional purpose, while the high caloric value makes buffalo ghee more useful for people who wish to gain weight.

High Calorie Content Makes Weight Gain Easier

The nutritionists highlight that healthy weight gain depends on having a stable surplus of calories, where more calories need to be taken than burned every day.

Considering the fact that buffalo ghee contains over 120 calories per just one tablespoon, this makes it possible to take more calories on a daily basis without necessarily taking large portions. This is particularly helpful for people who have poor appetite or high energy needs.

Instead of taking large portions of food, taking one spoon of buffalo ghee to any meal eaten daily can make it more energy-dense.

    Healthy Fats Provide Concentrated Energy

Almost all the calories in buffalo ghee are attributed to its fat content, and it is thus very energy-rich.

A gram of fat provides about 9 calories, which is almost twice the amount of calories that carbohydrates and proteins provide in a gram. It is due to such high calorie content that even small amounts of buffalo ghee provide many calories.

It has been suggested that buffalo ghee has been incorporated into the diet for weight gain because it does not increase the bulk of food but just its caloric value.

    Fat-Soluble Vitamins Support Overall Nutrition

Despite the fact that vitamins do not add weight to the body directly, the specialists in nutrition indicate that vitamins are helpful in maintaining good health when people eat more calories.

The vitamins contained in buffalo ghee include vitamins A, D, E, and K, which absorb much better in the presence of fat.

They play an important role in:

    • Immune system
    • Bone density
    • Cell growth and regeneration
    • Anti-oxidant defense
    • Metabolic activities

As the specialists indicate, healthy weight gain is not all about calories, but also about having sufficient nutrients, therefore buffalo ghee is highly nutritious food.

Butyric Acid and CLA: Additional Nutritional Components

Buffalo ghee is also rich in naturally occurring ingredients like butyric acid and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).

Butyric acid is a short chain of fatty acids which occurs naturally in dairy fat. CLA has been extensively studied as an ingredient which aids in metabolism and body composition. Nevertheless, nutritionists agree that neither of these ingredients causes obesity.

Rather, the ability of buffalo ghee to contribute to healthy obesity is due to its calorific content and fat, whereas these naturally occurring ingredients only make up part of its nutritional content.

How to Include Buffalo Ghee in a Weight Gain Diet

Buffalo ghee is supposed to be taken in a balanced diet meal and should not be eaten alone.

Some practical ways to increase calorie intake include:

    • Spread some over rotis and parathas.
    • Blend it with dal and steamed rice.
    • Use it in khichdi and dishes from millets.
    • Blend it with milk porridge.
    • Use it to make laddoos using nuts and seeds.
    • Add it to cooked vegetables after preparation.
    • Also use it with paneer and other protein-rich foods.

In this way, combining buffalo ghee with proteins and whole grains enables one to have a balanced and high-calorie meal.

    Choosing the Right Buffalo Ghee

In addition, nutritionists also emphasize the importance of the quality of the chosen Buffalo Ghee. This is due to the fact that ghee, which is produced using pure buffalo milk without any additives, helps retain its valuable qualities. At the same time, some customers choose Bilona Ghee, which is prepared traditionally, but the main criterion is the quality of the product.

When buying organic Desi Ghee, one should also pay attention to the package. The name “desi ghee” can denote either cow ghee or buffalo ghee, and their composition varies slightly.

    End Note

According to the nutritionists, buffalo ghee promotes healthy weight gain due to the high amount of calories and beneficial fats it contains. Consuming buffalo ghee in moderation as part of a calorically surplus diet is a good way to consume extra calories and obtain beneficial fat-soluble vitamins.
